CfP: Students' conference in Krakow: Collective Memory throughout the Ages


Fakulta historie Jagellonské univerzity v Krakově pořádá mezi 16. a 18. dubnem 2026 IV Cracovian Congress of History Students na téma Collective Memory Throughout the Ages.


Momentálně probíhá call for papers, který byl prodloužen do 25. 1. 2026.

Date: 16th - 18th of April 2026

Place: Collegium Novum, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland; 14 Gołębia Street

Fee: 70 € (4 nights accommodation, meals, cultural program)

Travel costs are not included!

Deadline: 11th of January 2026, 23:59 CEST (prolonged till 25th of January 2026)

8th of February 2026 - date of an official response to your application (we ask for your patience, everyone is going to receive it at the same time


Abstract

Title: bold, Times New Roman, size 12 (centered).

Font: Times New Roman, size 12, line spacing 1.5.

Length: around 450 words.

Content: The abstract should briefly present the research problem, methodology, and main conclusions.

The Congress will be held in English, therefore the abstract and bibliography must be in this language.


Bibliography

A bibliography must be attached to the abstract (for example, on the next page).

It should include at least 9 items:

  • 3 primary sources

  • 6 scholarly studies (Only peer-reviewed or academically recognized works will be accepted).


We have prepared a list of topics that can be used, but of course, feel free to explore the idea of collective memory in your own way!


social reception of historical events (interpretation of events - uprisings, wars, peace treaties, social changes and transformations);

memory about events connecting societies (places, rituals, holidays);

trauma, repression, denial and forgetting (genocides, colonial violence, crimes);

politics of memory (memory as a tool of conflict; who decides what we remember; politics of historical memory);

mechanisms of memory and oblivion (commemoration and omission);

founding myths (legends justifying the existence of communities, mythologization of figures and processes);

popular culture and collective memory (Schindler’s List, Call of Duty: WW2, Troy);

difficult memory (the breakup of Yugoslavia, Middle East);

culture of memory (symbolism – flags, gestures, colours);

collective memory in historical education (museums, monuments, intangible historical/cultural heritage);

historical reenactment.
